Progress, Resilience, and the Path Forward: Standing Together Beyond the Election

From the desk of YWCA Evanston/North Shore President & CEO Cherese R. Ledet

YWCA Evanston/North Shore stands firmly committed to our mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and foster peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. In every season and through every challenge, our work remains guided by these principles, dedicated to ensuring that all women have the right to be safe and make choices about their own lives. Today is no different.

As we reflect on the election, we honor the historic achievements that represent progress, including the enduring legacy of trailblazers who have redefined what’s possible for women and people of color across the nation. Vice President Kamala Harris’s role as the first female vice president, the highest-ranking woman in U.S. government history, and the first HBCU graduate and Divine Nine member to hold this office, inspires future generations and strengthens the pursuit of equity in leadership.

However, we recognize the unique challenges facing our communities today. The fears many feel around the impacts at state and local levels, particularly among women, communities of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, and everyone at the intersections of these identities, are real and resonate deeply. For those feeling a sense of betrayal or uncertainty, please know we understand, and we are here with and for you. The grief is real, and now is the time for us to support one another through community care, solidarity, and resilience.

The grassroots efforts we witnessed throughout this election cycle were powerful and essential. Let’s continue to build on that momentum and honor the progress that has been made by preserving and expanding the reach of these local and national networks. Together, we have the opportunity to cultivate a sustained movement for justice and equity.

As Mariame Kaba says, “Let this radicalize you rather than lead you to despair.” As a black woman, I draw strength from those who have come before me – over 400 years of resilience, determination, and commitment to justice, which inspire us as we continue to serve and support our communities.

YWCA Evanston/North Shore will continue to provide essential services, be a trusted partner, and center the voices of those who remain steadfast in the fight for a just, inclusive future. We are grateful for your support, and we look forward to walking alongside you in this journey every day.
